When Gus Ulrich took the Sandhills Community College coaching job in late summer 2008 he wasn’t sure what to expect. What his Flyers have accomplished in the time from those humble beginnings remains nothing short of impressive. Highlights include a NJCAA D3 National Championship in June 2014 to go along with two Runner-Up finishes (2013, 2015), 3rd Place (2011) and 5th Place (2010) finishes in the same event. Also the program has won the Region X Championship five times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015). All Americans under Ulrich’s tutelage include Chris Horne (2009, 2010), Nick Thompson (2013, National Medalist 2014), Ediz Kemaloglu (2014, 2015), Cody Roberts (2014, 2015), Alex Meade (2013), Brandon Grzywacz (2015) and Nick Kroustalis (2015).

Ulrich, originally from Garner, NC is an accomplished professional himself. As a four year member of the NC State golf program Ulrich was named team most valuable player his senior season. He turned pro after college and was a member of the Web.Com Tour in 1991 and 92. In 2011 he captured the Carolinas PGA Professional Championship at Kiawah Island, SC. The victory earned Gus a spot in the 2012 PGA Professional Championship and a spot in the PGA Tour’s 2012 Wyndham Championship. He’s also garnered two North Carolina Open Championships.

While currently serving as the Director of Instruction at Pinewild Country Club (Pinehurst) he has also worked locally at Pine Needles and Forest Creek as an instructor and assistant golf professional. He remains highly regarded as a teacher and a golf professional.

The 2016-17 season marks Ulrich’s ninth as head men’s golf coach. Gus and wife Annie have two boys Kristofer and Kyle.
