Joshua B. Smith was named as assistant coach at Sandhills Community College in the summer of 2018 and is currently in his first season with the Flyers as a member of the basketball coaching staff.

Smith joins the Flyers coaching staff after completing his NCAA athletic eligibility with Fayetteville State University’s Basketball and Golf teams from 2017–2018 where Smith earned honors of “Basketball Defensive Player of the Year” and “Golf Rookie of the Year”.

Prior to attending Fayetteville State University, Smith received his associate’s degree from Sandhills Community College and held a vital role on the Flyers Basketball Team.  He received numerous awards to include First Team All-Region and Basketball All Academic Team for both the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons; Basketball All Freshman Team for the 2015-2016 season, and Basketball Offensive Player of The Year for the 2016-2017 season.  Smith was also awarded the Louis Meyer Brown, Sr. Award for Excellence in Athletics in 2017.

Upon Smith’s graduation from Trinity Christian High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he competed in basketball and track; Coach Smith attended Mars Hill University where he ran track for the Lions prior to making his decision to return to basketball that led him to connect with the Sandhills Flyers.

Josh’s knowledge of the sport of basketball in addition to his dedication to proper health and fitness training makes him a strong asset to the Sandhills Flyers.  Coach Mike Apple had this to say about him, “Josh has already made a tremendous impact on Sandhills with how he handled himself as a player both on and off the court.  I think he will be a fantastic role model and mentor for our student athletes.”

Coach Smith resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina and is originally from Compton, California.
