Sandhills Community College goes into Thursday's third round of the NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in third place, trailing the leader Minnesota State by two strokes and second place Georgia Military by one.
The Flyers' Trey Capps shot a one-over par 73 on Wednesday and leads Hunter Moen of Minnesota State by one stroke in the competition for medalist honors. On a day that included about a two-hour weather delay, the other scores for the Flyers were: Grant Gilbert, 78, Nick Agapion, 80, Nevin Bullough, 85 and Ted Sluser, 89.
The margin between Sandhills, the leader after Tuesday's first round, and fourth place Columbus State, is 22 strokes. The three leading teams will be paired together in threesomes that begin play on the 10th tee at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Capps was quickly two-under par after sinking a downhill 20-foot putt for eagle on his first hole of the day, the 521-yard 10th. Gilbert helped keep the Flyers in contention with a dramatic bounce-back from a seven-over par start after three holes to complete the final 15 holes in one-under.
"Hopefully, Grant will ride that momentum into tomorrow," Flyers' Coach Gus Ulrich said by phone Wednesday evening. "The conditions were pretty brutal today. The course was soaking wet and it was windy.
"Including some family members, we've got a little support group and the guys are confident about tomorrow. I'd love to go into Friday with a cushion."
The three contending teams finished second, third and fourth in the championship a year ago (SCC, Georgia Military, Minnesota State). Vincennes (IN), the 2018 champion, competed in NJCAA Division II this year.
