Strong Tournaments by Ou and Watson Mark Start of Spring Campaign for Lady Flyers
A tied for fourth place finish by sophomore Parker Watson, and an impressive debut by freshman Shirley Ou, were two of the highlights for the Sandhills Community College women's golf team in the first two tournaments of the spring season.
Watson posted scores of 74-74-148 in a field of 57 golfers at the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational in Bluffton, S.C. earlier this week. Sandhills was the only junior college and finished ninth among the 11 team field of NCAA Division II and III teams.
A week earlier in South Carolina, Ou shot 75-75-77-227 at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic to finish in a tie for 58th place in the field of 217 golfers. The Lady Flyers came in 42nd as the only junior college squad in the field of 42 NCAA Division I and one NAIA teams.
Coach Herb Pike's squad will be playing close to home on March 18 and 19 when Mercyhurst University of Erie, Pa. again hosts the Brown Golf Intercollegiate at the County Club of Whispering Pines. The Lady Flyers finished eighth out of 12 Division II and III teams at the event a year ago.
West Chester University (Pa.) is expected to return to defend its title.
Ou, who is from Beijing, China, missed the Hilton Head Lakes event because of illness. Pike was impressed with the way she dealt with the difficult wind conditions on the final day at Kiawah Island.
"The main thing was that Shirley didn't make any big numbers and got up and down to save par quite a few times," the coach said. "She did very well for the conditions."
The other Flyers' scores in the tournament won by College of Charleston
were: Watson 82-83-89-254, sophomore Amanda Hill 87-82-87-256 and freshman Danielle Marovich 89-93-83-265.
Watson, a product of Smithfield-Selma High School, missed tying for medalist honors by just two strokes at the Hilton Head Lakes tournament. Pike liked the way she bounced back in her final round to make three birdies after going four over par through the early holes.
"I've always known Parker has the ability," her coach said. "I think she learned a lot from this tournament."
Hill, tied for 24th with scores of 82-85-167 and Marovich tied for 30th after rounds of 85-87-172. The biggest improvement from day one to day two was by sophomore Alicia Dunlap who finished 54th with scores of 124-101-225.
It made a difference in the final team standings of the event won by Anderson University (SC).
"I was proud of her for improving that much," her coach said.
