Lady Flyers Qualify For National Tournament in Mesa, Ariza

Shirley Ou led the way with rounds of 81-78-159 as the Sandhills Women's Golf team won the Region X title last week at Legacy Golf Links. She nipped teammate Parker Watson, who shot 83-77-160, by one stroke.

The Lady Flyers are now qualified to compete in the NJCAA Women's National Championship on May 14-17 at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona.

Coach Herb Pike's squad was unopposed team-wise at Legacy.  Spartanburg Methodist, the defending Region X champion, had two golfers competing as individuals and Surry CC had one.

The Flyers' 36-hole team score of 330-326-656 also included Amanda Hill, 79-84-163 and Danielle Mirovich, 87-87-174. The fifth member of the team, Alicia Dunlap, posted scores of 117-102-219.

Through five spring events, Ou leads the team with a stroke average of 76.5. The lowest previous average for a Lady Flyer was 79.2 by Kim Mitchell in 2012-13. Mitchell went on to become a standout at Western Carolina University. Ou was also the medalist at the Brown Golf Intercollegiate held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines in March.

Other spring averages include Watson, 82.6, Hill 85.0, Mirovich 87.4 and Dunlap 116.5.

Watson finished in 48th place and Hill finished 59th at the 2017 National Championship held in Braselton, Ga. after qualifying for the tournament as individuals. The best finish for the Flyers as a team was 11th in 2012 and 2015. They came in 16th on their last trip in 2016.
