Foley Goes Toe-to-Toe With Former ACC Standout at Flyers Fall Invitational

Foley Goes Toe-to-Toe With Former ACC Standout at Flyers Fall Invitational

In her fourth year of playing the game of golf, Sandhills Community College freshman Scotty Foley found herself paired with Monika Vicario of Meredith College in Tuesday's second round of the Flyers Fall Invitational.

A native of Bamberg, Germany, and a member of Germany's national team, Vicario is a graduate student at Meredith following four-years at North Carolina State where she was second all-time in the Wolfpack record books with a career stroke average of 74.42. She finished in a tie for eighth place at the ACC Championships last April.

Vicario followed up her first round 67 at Long Leaf Golf and Family Club on Monday with a 74 to earn medalist honors with a 141 total. Foley, a product of Hickory Ridge High School, shot 80-76-156 to finish in fourth place individually.

"I lost a few strokes out there, but it was better than yesterday," Foley said afterward. "I feel pretty good, especially playing against a DI player from last year and being able to stick up with her.

"She shot a 67 yesterday, but today I was only two strokes behind her."

The Methodist "B" team took first place followed by the Lady Flyers and Meredith in the field of three teams.

Ava Ray was next for Coach Herb Pike's squad, finishing in eighth place (87-87-174) followed by another freshman, Aubrianna Bishop in ninth place (93-98-191).

Lindsay McAulay, and Hayla Bryson, who was injured early in Tuesday's round and withdrew, completed the Flyer lineup.

Foley's main athletic interests prior to taking up the game of golf were softball and basketball. A business and cosmetology major at Sandhills, she is determined to take her golf to the next level.

She and Ray are daily workout partners at the college.

"We just try to stay active and get the blood flowing early in the morning," Foley said.

Says Pike, "Scotty is a player. She can hit the ball a long way. She works all the time and she'll get better."

Next on the schedule for the Lady Flyers is the Battle for Royalty Tournament hosted by Queens University of Charlotte on Monday and Tuesday at Southern Pines Country Club.

On Wednesday, Vicario was named the Conference USA South Women's Golfer of the Week for her accomplishment at Long Leaf.
