Flyers Start Strong in Defense of NJCAA Men's Golf Title
Sophomore Andreas Huber led the field with a 1-under par round of 71 on Tuesday and the Sandhills Community College men's golf team jumped out to a 19-stroke lead after the first round of the NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
All five of Coach Gus Ulrich's players finished in the top seven and ties in the field of 64 golfers and 10 teams at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, NY.
A 73 by freshman Alex Martin was the second lowest score of the day. The Flyers' team score of 295 also included a 75 by Carson Witherspoon, and a pair of 76's by Adam Hathaway and Austin Wood.
In pursuit of its second national title in a row, the Flyers lead second place Niagara County CC of Sanborn, NY by 19 strokes and third place DuPage CC of Glen Ellyn, IL by 26.
Georgia Military college, which nipped the Flyers by one stroke for the national title in 2019, and was the runner-up by a stroke last June, is in fourth place 28 strokes behind.
In the first year of an NJCAA Division III women's tournament there were no complete teams entered. Representing Coach Herb Pike's Lady Flyers, Scotty Foley shot an 82, and teammate Ava Ray posted an 86, to lead a field of six golfers, competing as individuals.
The start of the tournament was delayed by about three hours because of inclement weather. The golfers dealt with intermittent rain throughout the remainder of the day.
The 72-hole event concludes on Friday on the par 72, 6,514 yard layout set up for the men's tournament.
"It was a great start on a really tough day," Ulrich said by phone on Tuesday evening. "They grinded out good rounds.
"I told them we have to keep building the lead and being the lowest team each day."
