Flyers Expand Lead on Day Two of NJCAA Men's Golf Championship

The Sandhills Community College men's golf team posted a 5-over par team score of 293 on Wednesday and lead second place DuPage CC by 36 strokes at the halfway mark of the NJCAA Division III National Championship in Chautauqua, NY.

Freshman Austin Wood shot a 2-under par 70 for the Flyers, tying the best round of the tournament as Coach Gus Ulrich's squad seeks to repeat as national champions. The other second day scores for the Flyers included a 73 by Adam Hathaway, a 74 by Andreas Huber and a pair of 76's by Alex Martin and Carson Witherspoon.

"The boys played solid golf again today," Ulrich said later. "The goal is to continue building our lead.

"I told them, 'lets try to break the tournament scoring record'. The weather is going to be bad tomorrow so I'm not sure that will happen."

The 72-hole scoring record of 1,168 was set in 2006 by Monroe CC (NY) and Louisburg College.

Huber (71-74-145) and Damian Guerrero of DuPage (75-70-145) are on top individually with Wood (76-70-146) close behind. All five of the Flyer golfers are in the top eight and ties individually.

In the NJCAA Division III Women's Championship, the Lady Flyers' Scotty Foley, with a 78, and Ava Ray with an 84, posted the lowest scores in the small field of six golfers competing as individuals. Foley (82-78-160) leads teammate Ray (86-84-170) after two rounds.

Later at dinner, members of the Sandhills men's and women's teams celebrated Ray's birthday.
