Lady Flyers Record First Win of Season in SC , Host Guilford Tech on Tuesday
The Sandhills Community College volleyball team defeated USC Sumter CC 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14 for its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, SC.
Earlier, in the first match of the tri-meet, the Lady Flyers were defeated 22-25, 20-25 and 17-25 by the host USC Lancaster team. USC Lancaster defeated USC Sumter 26-24, 25-15 and 25-15 in the final match of the day.
Coach Alicia Riggan's squad takes a record of 1-2 into its home opener at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Guilford Tech (0-1). It will also be Student Night at The Hangar. Free popsicles will be given to students, attending the game.
"I think we are learning how to play together," Riggan said on Sunday. "The girls are working hard and we are trying different rotations to see what works better together.
"We have got to minimize our errors in order to stay in the games. We get another opportunity to work on that tomorrow at practice."
The Lady Flyers connected on a very low percentage of their attacks in the match against Division II USC Lancaster. Sophomore Keke Lawrence was the leader in kills with six. Other statistical leaders included freshman Lannah Huneycutt with 11 assists, sophomore L'Asia Jackson with 13 digs and freshman Alyssa Maragelis with 11 digs.
Sophomore Mackenzie Swett led the Lady Flyers up front with five kills and four solo blocks in the sweep of Division I USC Sumter. Setters Huneycutt and Alexis Hinson contributed six and five assists, respectively. Jackson was the leader in digs with 13.
Earlier this month, the Lady Flyers were ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll. Owens CC (OH) was ranked No. 1. The Flyers will be competing in a Region 10 conference that also includes Central Carolina CC, Caldwell Tech, Patrick Henry CC, Rockingham CC and Southwest Virginia CC.
