Lady Flyers Take On Alumni Team in Volleyball Match on Saturday
Last year's Sandhills Community College volleyball alumni game was a five-set thriller that lasted for two hours with the former Lady Flyers prevailing.
"I think this might have been the best alumni game we've ever had, " Head Coach Alicia Riggan said at that time.
A dozen Lady Flyer alums have signed up to give this year's squad its first test, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday at The Hangar. Six returnees from the 2022 team along, with 12 freshmen, will try to turn the tables on a distinguished group of counterparts. They will also be prepping for the regular season openers at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at home against Cleveland CC on August 18 that is preceded by another exhibition contest on August 16 against St. Andrews University.
"The annual Alumni Game is one of my favorite events of the year," Riggan said on Monday. "It gives both past and present an opportunity to connect and get to know each other. I love seeing former Flyers back in the gym playing.
"Most of them attend open gyms, work camps, help out with game day events when needed, and coach in our Junior Flyers Beach Club. I want all of our players to know once you become a Flyer you are always welcomed back and part of our Flyer Family".
The distiguished group of former players include NJCAA All-Americans Carley Modlin (2020) and Abby Wallace (2018), Region 10 Player of the Year and Sandhills Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Tiffany Hicks (2015), Abby Quick (2022), Camryn Lowe (2021), Alexis McCrimmon (2020), Khaile Jones (2020), Tee' Ashia Lilly (2018), Rachael Mashburn (2018), Courtney Grant (2015), Peyton Wood (2014) and Brittney Karshner Baxter (2009).
A challenging first official week of workouts for a Lady Flyer squad, seeking to repeat as Region 10 regular season and conference tournament champions, and earn another trip to the national tournament, included weight and fitness training along with team building activities.
The Lady Flyer returnees that competed in last year's alumni game include Lannah Huneycutt, Dajsha Fields, Alexis Hinson, Alyssa Maragelis and Ny'asia McKinnon.
