Flyers Battle St. Johns River State College to Close Spring Break Trip
The Sandhills Community College Flyers wrapped up their spring break road trip Friday with a doubleheader against St. Johns River State College in Palatka. Despite several competitive sets throughout the day, the Vikings earned victories in both duals.
In the opening match, Brooke Emore and Olivia Rosy faced Lovina Teel and Alice Peixoto, falling 21-15 and 21-19. Katelyn Bunting and Reagan Malpass dropped their match against Elisa Stoltzfus and Paola Aviles 21-9, 21-16.
Taylor Miller and Jaselyn Fink battled Andrea Reyes and McKala Peters but fell 21-11, 21-8. Emery Freeman and Alyssa Ingle kept their match competitive before falling 21-18, 21-14 to Jessica Horn and Emma York.
The closest contest of the first dual came from Reagan Smith and Jacque Holden, who pushed their opponents to three sets. After winning the opening set 23-21, the Flyers pair dropped the final two sets 21-12 and 15-11.
In the second dual of the day, Sandhills continued to compete against the Vikings. Emore and Rosy pushed their opponents in the first set before falling 22-20 and 21-11.
Bunting and Malpass also played a tight opening set before dropping their match 22-20, 21-13. Miller and Fink fell 21-16, 21-14, while Freeman and Ingle dropped a 21-8, 21-15 decision.
Smith and Holden again forced a decisive third set after splitting the first two sets 13-21 and 21-11, but St. Johns River State College pulled away in the tiebreaker to win 15-6.
The matches concluded Sandhills' spring break trip to Florida, where the Flyers gained valuable experience competing in multiple duals over the course of the week.
The Flyers will return home next Friday for a Region 10 doubleheader against Gaston College, with matches scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
