Flyers Take First Place at Surry CC Fall Classic
The Sandhills Community College men's golf team took first place by 23 strokes at the Surry Community College Fall Classic held at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin on Wednesday.
The medalist was Austin Smith of Surry after a round of 75. The Flyers posted a team score of 311 that included 77's by Ted Sluser and Adam Hathaway, a 78 by Andreas Huber and a 79 by Nick Agapion. Other scores for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad included: Carson Witherspoon 77, Logan Davidson 82 and Grant Gilbert 83.
The other teams in the field for the final event of the fall campaign were USC Sumpter and Davidson County CC.
"It was a nasty rainy day," Ulrich said. "The boys showed a lot of patience and perseverance and managed their games well. Carson played as an individual so I was very happy with his play. Andreas struggled all day, but we discussed where he struggled and we are going to work hard on his short game."
The win was the second in a row for the Flyers in the abbreviated fall season.
"The fall season was very short and very unusual obviously because of Covid," the coach said. "But I'm very excited about how we played and performed and very excited for the spring, hoping for a normal season. These kids are excited and playing well."
Still ahead is a fundraiser golf tournament on Friday, November 13 at Pinewild Country Club. As a part of the event there will be an announcement of an endowment to the college. The amount of $100,000 will be donated by Melvin Nelson of The Insurance Center in Southern Pines in memory of his son Melvin "Glenn" Nelson, Jr.
