Flyers Take Early Lead at NJCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship
The Sandhills Community College men's golf team opened its pursuit of a sixth consecutive national championship in impressive fashion Monday, taking the first-round lead at the 2026 NJCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship at Chautauqua Golf Club.
The Flyers posted a team score of 6-over-par, finishing six strokes ahead of second-place Georgia Military College (+12) after the opening round of the four-day championship. Community College of Morris sits third at +16, followed by College of DuPage (+19) and Rowan College Gloucester County (+20).
Sandhills was paced by a trio of players near the top of the individual leaderboard. Vegas Melen fired a 1-under-par 71 to finish the day alone in second place, just one shot behind tournament leader Jake Morgan of Community College of Morris, who carded a 2-under 70.
Melen's round featured a steady even-par front nine before he turned in a 1-under back nine. He recorded birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 and closed his round with a par on the 18th to finish under par.
The Flyers placed three golfers among the top four after Round 1. Trace Wallace and Sebastian Haug each shot 2-over-par 74 and are tied for fourth place entering Tuesday's second round. Wallace recovered from a challenging start to post an even-par back nine, while Haug played a consistent final nine holes to remain in contention.
Wyatt Beaver rounded out the Sandhills scoring lineup with a 3-over-par 75, placing him in a tie for eighth overall. Beaver highlighted his round with a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole and remained within striking distance of the individual lead.
The Flyers' balanced effort proved to be the difference in the team standings. Sandhills placed all four scoring golfers inside the top 10 individually, creating separation from a tightly packed field.
The championship continues Tuesday with Round 2 at Chautauqua Golf Club, where Sandhills will look to build on its six-shot advantage and move one step closer to another national title.
