Flyers Extend Commanding Lead, Haug Takes Individual Lead at NJCAA National Championship
With just one round remaining, the Sandhills Community College men's golf team enters Friday's final round with a commanding 28-stroke lead over second-place College of DuPage (+32).
The Flyers continued their dominant performance Thursday at Chautauqua Golf Club, posting their second consecutive under-par team round with a 1-under score to improve to 4-over-par for the tournament.
Delta College sits third at +34, while Georgia Military College rounds out the top four at +36.
Sandhills also moved to the top of the individual leaderboard as Sebastian Haug carded a 2-under-par round to take sole possession of first place at 3-under-par through 54 holes. Haug has been one of the steadiest players in the field, following his opening-round 74 with back-to-back under-par rounds of 69 and 70.
The Flyers have three players among the top six individuals entering the final day.
Vegas Melen remains firmly in contention in fifth place at 5-over-par after posting a third-round 75, while Trace Wallace climbed into a tie for sixth place at 6-over-par following a solid 1-over round.
Wyatt Beaver rounded out the Flyers' scoring lineup with an even-par performance on Thursday and sits 14th overall at 10-over-par.
The Flyers' depth once again proved to be the difference. While Sandhills improved its overall score for a second straight day, several of the top challengers struggled to keep pace, allowing the defending national champions to grow their lead from 20 strokes after Round 2 to 28 strokes entering the final round.
