Flyers Take Lead into Day Two of Browngolf Intercollegiate
On a beautiful Friday for a walk in the park, the Sandhills Community College men's golf team took a six-stroke lead into Saturday's second round of the Browngolf Intercollegiate held at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club Red Fox Course.
The Flyers were led by sophomores Andreas Huber with an even-par 72, and Nick Agapion and Ted Sluser with rounds of 73. Huber, tied for third, and Agapion and Sluser, tied for sixth place, are in the top 10 among the field of 74 golfers from 12 teams.
Flyers' Coach Gus Ulrich likes the way his team is bouncing back against a field made up of primarily NCAA Division II teams after finishing third in a four-team field two weeks ago at the Central Carolina CC Cougar Classic.
"I think the weather has encouraged everybody to get out and practice," Ulrich after the last of the Flyers putted out on the 18th green. "We've trained really hard the last 10 days for this event. We really struggled in our first event so I think we were determined to do better."
The Flyer team score of 296 also included a 78 by Carson Witherspoon. Andrew Crawford posted an 80 and Adam Hathaway, playing as an individual, shot a 78.
The individual leader after round one with a two-under par 70 is Abe Holmes of Gannon University located in Erie, PA.
Huber, who is from Bruneck, Italy, made an eagle on the par five 14th hole.
"The weather was really nice," he said. "We got in some good practice, especially here at Foxfire and that helped. Let's hope we're pretty far up there and have a chance to finish in a good spot."
The closest pursuers going into Saturday's round are Wayne State (MI), 302, Gannon, 303 and West Liberty (WV), 305.
"This was a good start,"Ulrich said. "They're still a little rusty, but they're motivated now and a lot more encouraged.
"I think we're in a really good position for tomorrow for a really good experience for the kids."
