Paced by Sluser, Agapion, Huber, Flyers Finish Second Against Tough Field
A bid by the Sandhills Community College men's golf team to capture the team title at the Browngolf Intercollegiate on Saturday came to an end on the final hole of the tournament.
As the only two-year college in the field of mostly NCAA Division II teams, the Flyers (296-298-594) finished second to Gannon University (PA) (303-290-593) by one stroke in the 36-hole event held at nearby Foxfire Resort and Golf Club. The medalist was Abe Holmes of Gannon at two-under par (70-72-142)
Three Flyers finished in the top seven in the field of 74 golfers from 12 teams, led by Ted Sluser in third place at one-over par (73-72-145). Close behind was Nick Agapion in a tie for fourth at two-over (73-73-146). Andreas Huber took seventh place at four-over (72-76- 148).
The Flyers took a six-stroke lead into the final round on the Red Fox course playing at 6,743 yards. Gannon caught up and surpassed them with a two-over par team score of 290 that was the lowest of any of the teams during the two days by six strokes.
The other scores for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad included: Andrew Crawford, tie for 31st (80-77-157), Adam Hathaway, 41st (78-81-159) and Carson Witherspoon, tie for 42nd (78-82-160). Hathaway competed for the Flyers as an individual.
A putt for birdie from about 40-feet by Crawford in the final group that would have tied the match missed to the left. Afterward Ulrich took plenty of positives from his team's performance against the tough field.
"We didn't get off to as good a start as I was hoping today and then Gannon played a really good round as a team," he said. "I wish we could have pulled off a victory. The silver-lining to this is that I thought to be that close as the only two-year school was a really good showing.
"They dug deep. I'm excited for all of them. I think this is going to make the team bubble with excitement and confidence, and work even harder."
The next tournament is the Flyer Invitational at Long Leaf Golf Club on March 29-30. Coming off a third place finish in a field of four teams at their previous tournament, Ulrich sees the Foxfire event as a positive stepping stone toward preparing for the NJCAA Division III National Championship on June 7-11 in Chautauqua, NY.
Both Sluser and Agapion were members of the 2019 team that lost a double-digit lead in the final round of the national tournament to finish second behind Georgia Military College. The pair were a combined three-over for the two days at Foxfire.
According to Sluser, who made seven birdies, including one on the final hole of the tournament, the experience from two years ago did not enter his mind on Saturday.
"Two years ago compared to now, I think I'm a much more mature player," the product of Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School (PA) said. "Today I just played a solid round, two birdies, two bogeys, not a lot going on. Just a solid day of striking and a solid day of putting.
"We just love having the competition from the better schools coming in here. We're thankful for the opportunity."
The Flyers led the tournament in par five scoring with a a 4.78 average. Huber and Agapion contributed to that by accounting for two of the 10 eagles made in the tournament. After Huber scrambled from under low-hanging tree limbs to make par with about an eight-foot putt on the 16th hole, a Flyer follower quipped to Ulrich, "Now that's an All-American." The Flyers' coach responded, "That was an All-Italian putt", alluding to the sophomore's home country, Italy.
