Sandhills Third Behind Methodist B and C at Flyers Spring Classic

The Sandhills Community College men's golf team finished in third place behind the Methodist University B and C teams at the two-day Flyers Spring Classic that concluded on Tuesday at Longleaf Golf Club.

Carson Witherspoon finished in a tie for eighth place after rounds of 73-77-150 to lead the Flyers. Teammates Andreas Huber, 75-77-152 and Nick Agapion, 73-79-152, tied for 10th place in the field of five teams and 34 golfers, including those competing as individuals.

The Medalist was Cam Cappuzzo of the Methodist C team with a five-under par score of 69-70-139. Also under par was runner-up Logan Thompson of Methodist B after rounds of 70-71-141.

The team scores were: 1. Methodist B 294-292-586, 2. Methodist C 293-295-588, 3. Sandhills CC 298-308-606, 4. USC Sumpter 319-329-648, 5. Davidson-Davie CC 343-334-677.

The Flyers were coming off a strong showing 17 days earlier at the Browngolf Intercollegiate when as the only two-year college in a field of 12, mostly NCAA Division II teams, they finished in second place one stroke behind Gannon University (PA).

"We backpedaled a little this week based on what I was hoping for," Flyers' Coach Gus Ulrich said afterward. "I thought we played really well yesterday, but couldn't quite get there. Today was just a disappointment. I don't think anybody got on track."

Witherspoon, a product of Patton High School in Morganton, posted his best single round and 36 hole totals in his two seasons at Sandhills. He thought that Monday's one-over par round, that included two eagle opportunities, could have been even better had he been able to sink a few more putts.

"I was hitting the ball solid, didn't miss many fairways or greens and was chipping close," he said. "I just wasn't making any putts. I recently took a lesson from Coach Ulrich on putting and I'm hitting them more solidly. They just haven't started falling yet."

Ulrich thinks Witherspoon's game is turning the corner with his recent play.

"Carson is starting to implement some changes we've been working on and it's starting to click for him," the coach said. "He's gaining some confidence and his scores are starting to show it."

Rounding out the scores for the Sandhills team, Adam Hathaway finished 12th after rounds of 77-76-153 and David Langley shot 83-78-161 and tied for 18th place.

Competing as individuals for the Flyers, Andrew Crawford tied for 18th with scores of 80-81-161, Dakota Oman was 21st, 83-81-164, and Noah Maness tied for 22nd, 87-80-167. Surry CC, Central Carolina CC and Patrick Henry CC were also represented by players competing as individuals.

Next on the schedule for the Flyers is the Davidson-Davie Storm Invitational on April 5-6. On April 12-14, the Flyers and Pinewild Country Club will host a Georgia Military College team that defeated them by one-stroke for the 2019 Division III National Championship in a Ryder Cup style match.

"The goal is to prepare for nationals (June 7-11, Chautauqua Golf Course, Chautauqua, NY)," Ulrich said. "Every step along the way helps as we get closer to that goal and hopefully winning. I'm a little disappointed with today, but I saw some good stuff too."
