Flyer Golfers Lead by Four Strokes in Bid for Second NJCAA National Title
Nick Agapion shot a 2-under-par round of 70, helping the Sandhills Community College men's golf team take a four-stroke lead over Georgia Military College into Friday's final round of the NJCAA Division III National Championship.
The sophomore from Gaffney, SC was a member of the 2019 squad that finished in second place one-stroke behind the Bulldogs on the same Chautauqua Golf Club course in Chautauqua, NY. He got off to a strong start on Thursday that had him sitting at 4-under-par through the first six holes.
Teammate Andreas Huber posted a 75 and is tied with Wyatt Blomseth of Minnesota State Tech at 3-over-par in the competition for individual honors. Agapion is in third place at 4-over.
The Flyer team score of 302 also included a 77 by Carson Witherspoon and an 80 by Adam Hathaway. Andrew Crawford, the fifth member of the team, shot an 81.
The Flyers began the third round, trailing Georgia Military by one stroke. Minnesota State Tech goes into the final round in third place 10 strokes back.
In addition to Coach Gus Ulrich, Assistant Coach Herb Pike, Athletic Director Mike Apple, Associate Athletic Director Ryan Riggan and a number of family members of the players enjoyed a beautiful day for golf.
Following Thursday's round, the team held a practice that included some friendly competition. It will be back to business on Friday when the Flyers have an opportunity to add a second national title to the one they won in 2014.
"Georgia Military is right on our heels," Ulrich said by phone afterwards. "We're on the edge of really playing good golf as a team. The guys are excited about playing tomorrow. If they play their game, they'll come out on top."
