The Sandhills Community College men's golf team placed three players in the top five individually and won the 36-hole Laker Spring Shootout by 14 strokes over second place Mount Olive University on Saturday at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club Red Fox course.

The Flyers Ben Read earned medalist honors with a 2-under par score of 69-73-142. Teammate and first round leader Alex Martin was the runner-up individually with scores of 68-79-147.

Four Flyers finished in the top 10 in the field of 54 golfers from eight four-year colleges, including Adam Hathaway in a tie for fourth place and Fifa Chankarn in a tie for 10th.  Rounding out the lineup, Noah Maness finished in a tie for 14th place.

Logan Hay and Tyler Owens represented the Flyers as individuals, finishing in a tie for 29th and a tie for 32nd place respectively.

In spite of improved weather conditions from Friday when the players had to deal with intermittent rain, the Flyers' team score was 19 strokes higher on Saturday.

"Today has been a little disappointing," Coach Gus Ulrich said as he watched the final groups approach the 18th green. "No one is really playing well other than Ben. It's been a tough day with the cold and wind, and some tough pins.

"Yesterday was a great day for us. I'd say this is a good start to the year for sure."

Next is the Barton College Intercollegiate, starting on Monday at Wilson Country Club in Wilson, NC.  The teams will play 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 on Tuesday.

"I think the Barton tournament with bigger schools is going to be a real good test for us," Ulrich said.
