Flyers Men Finish in the Middle of the Pack at Barton Tournament
Freshman Ben Read took third place individually, and the Sandhills Community College men's golf team finished sixth in a field of 12 teams on Tuesday, at the Barton Intercollegiate held in Wilson, NC.
Read posted scores of 72-71-75-218 in the 54-hole event, finishing five strokes behind medalist Harrison Wierse of Barton College. The Flyers team score was 303-304-310-917. Barton took the team title by 27 strokes over the second place Barton B team with rounds of 285-284-300-869.
Coach Gus Ulrich's squad will be joined by the Lady Flyers squad on Monday and Tuesday in hosting the Stitch Golf/Flyers Invitational at Longleaf Golf and Family Club. A total of 12 teams, including Sandhills A and B teams, will make up the men's field. Johnson and Wales, Columbia College and USC Sumter will compete against Coach Herb Pike's Lady Flyers.
Every team except the Barton B team posted its highest score of the three rounds on a cold and windy Tuesday. Alex Martin had the second best 54-hole result for the Flyers, finishing in a tie for 25th place with scores of 72-79-79-230. He was followed by Noah Maness, T32, 78-76-78-232, Fifa Chankarn, T41, 81-80-78-239 and Adam Hathaway, T41, 81-78-80-239.
Barton College was ranked No. 22 in the March 3 Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
