Seeking to wrap up its third NJCAA Division III men's golf title in a row, Coach Gus Ulrich's Sandhills Community College team heads into Friday's final round in Chautauqua, NY with a 21-stroke lead over second place Georgia Military College. 

Led by freshman Ben Read with a 5-under par 67 on Thursday, the Flyers are 2-under par as a team through 54 holes.  Also on the Chautauqua Golf Club course, sophomore Ava Ray celebrated her 21st birthday by shooting a career-best 72 as the Lady Flyers continued to dominate the field of the NJCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship.  With only three players, Coach Herb Pike's squad is competing for individual honors in the small field of two teams and 17 players.

Read holds a three-stroke lead over teammate Alex Martin, who shot a 71 on Thursday, in the competition for individual honors. Teammates Noah Maness, Watcharakan Chankarn and Logan Hay are all in the top seven and ties in the field of 11 teams and 66 golfers.

Read, who is from Banchory, Scotland, is 7-under par and Martin is 3-under through three rounds on the 6,485 yard layout. The Flyers have accounted for 51 birdies, led by Read with 15 and Martin with 14.

Sophomore Trinity Ahing leads the Lady Flyers and the women's field with an even-par 74-73-75-222 total through 54 holes on the course set up at 5,415 yards and par 74 for the women.  She has a five-stroke lead over Ray in second place. Teammate Scotty Foley is in third place.  Ahing and Ray have each made a dozen birdies.

Oxford College of Emory (GA) leads RCSJ-Gloucester (NJ) by a wide margin in the team competition. With a fourth player, the Lady Flyers would have been in a strong position to wrap-up a national title on Friday, but according to Pike the players are feeling good about what they've done so far.

"I'm really proud of Ava," he said of the Fuqua Varina High School grad. "She has worked hard on her short game, putting, chipping and pitching. With her birthday today, she just had a good day."
