Flyers Hold the Lead After Day Two at Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate
The Sandhills Community College men's golf team turned in another strong performance on Saturday to remain atop the leaderboard after two rounds of the 52nd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate at Paradise Point Golf Club. The Flyers followed up their opening round 287 with a solid 292 to sit at +3 overall (579), five shots ahead of second-place Oglethorpe (+8) heading into Saturday's final round.
Sophomore Evan Cowell continues to pace the Flyers after carding a 74 (+2) in Round 2, bringing his tournament total to 143 (-1) and placing him in a tie for seventh individually. Freshman Will Mitchell is right behind him, sitting even par (144) after a 75 on Friday.
The biggest move of the day came from sophomore Wyatt Beaver, who bounced back in a big way with a two-under 70. His 145 (+1) total puts him in a tie for 15th and gives the Flyers a key boost in team scoring. Landon Cabingas (74–74–148) and Vegas Melen (75–74–149) provided steady contributions to round out the team's effort.
Sandhills' consistent play and depth have helped the team separate from a competitive field that includes nationally ranked programs. With four players inside the top 40 individually, the Flyers are in strong position to claim the Gold Championship title, but they'll need one more solid round to fend off challenges from Oglethorpe (+8), Franklin & Marshall (+9), and Shenandoah (+10).
The final round begins Sunday morning. Live scoring is available via GolfStat.
