Flyers Soar to First After Opening Round at NJCAA DIII Men's Golf National Championship
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — The Sandhills Community College men's golf team began its bid for a fifth consecutive NJCAA Division III national championship in dominant fashion Tuesday, surging to a commanding 14-stroke lead after the opening round at Chautauqua Golf Club.
The Flyers posted a team score of 2-under par to close the day at the top of the leaderboard, distancing themselves from second-place Georgia Military (+12) and third-place DuPage (+18) in a field of 11 teams.
Sandhills was led by Wyatt Beaver, who carded a blistering 4-under round to sit atop the individual standings. He was closely followed by teammate Vegas Melen, who fired a 3-under round to secure second place heading into Day Two.
All five Flyers finished in the top 15 individually, showcasing the depth that has fueled their championship streak. William Mitchell and Landon Cabingas both contributed solid rounds of +2 and +3, respectively, while Evan Cowell rounded out the team effort at +5.
With three rounds remaining in the four-day tournament, Sandhills holds a strong early advantage, but head coach Gus Ulrich will be looking to keep his team focused and sharp as they chase a historic fifth straight title.
