Flyer Golfers Compete for National Title this Week in New York
The Sandhills Community College men's golf team was scheduled to tune up for the NJCAA Division III National Championships with a practice round on Monday at the Chautauqua Golf Club course in Chautauqua, NY.
Nick Agapion, Andreas Huber, Carson Witherspoon, Adam Hathaway and Andrew Crawford will be teeing it up for Coach Gus Ulrich's Flyers in Tuesday's first round of the 64-hole event that concludes on Friday. Assistant Coach Herb Pike is also accompanying the team.
This is the same golf course where the Flyers won a national championship in 2014 and finished second by one stroke to Georgia Military College in 2019. The 2020 tournament was canceled because of the pandemic.
The field of 12 teams and 48 golfers this year is reduced from what it was in 2019 because of the number of colleges that did not compete this spring.
The Flyers have not competed in a tournament since April when Huber earned medalist honors at the Region 10 Championships. Also in April, the Flyers defeated Georgia Military at Pinewild Country Club in a Ryder Cup style match play event.
Earlier in the month, Hathaway was the medalist at the Storm Invitational in Thomasville.
Huber leads the Flyers with a stroke average of 75.87 for four spring tournaments followed by Agapion at 76.75.
The national tournament, that has been held at the same golf course since 2000, is hosted by Jamestown Community College. In addition to the 2014 national title, the Flyers have made other history there. They were also tournament runner-ups in 2013, 2015 and 2018. Nick Thompson won individual honors as a member of the 2014 title squad and Trey Capps earned individual honors in 2019.
