McMullin Pours in 27 as Flyers Down Hosanna Bible

The Sandhills Community College basketball team broke open a close game by scoring the first 10 points of the second half on the way to a 99-76 victory over Hosanna Bible College on Monday evening at The Hangar.

Leading 47-43 at the intermission, Nasir Johnson scored on an assist from Justice Asante to start the run that ended with a basket by Jordan Coleman off an inbound pass from Sam Stoltz. A drive for two by Chris Hunter with 13:18 remaining in the game extended the burst to 24-4 and a 71-47 advantage.

Ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Division III poll released on Monday, the Flyers improved to 3-1 on the season. Freshman Joey McMullin made 12 of his 15 shots from the field, including a pair of threes and led the winners with 27 points.

Next for Coach Mike Apple's squad is a 7 p.m. game at Guilford Tech on Wednesday. The next home date is on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Wake Tech.

Hosanna Bible canned five treys in a first half that saw the lead change hands eight times. With the Flyers leading 16-15, McMullin scored his team's next nine points, helping increase the margin to 25-20.

Later, tied at 33-33, Asante scored inside to give the Flyers a lead they never relinquished.

Other statistical leaders for the Flyers included Johnson with 11 points and Darryl McCaster with 10. Zac Sledge added eight points to go with a team-high 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Alon Hanani led the team in assists with six and in steals with three.

The Flyers enjoyed an overall 57 to 29 edge in rebounds with McCaster and Brayboy, grabbing six each.

The teams ahead of the Flyers in this week's national rankings are: 1. Dallas-Richland (TX) 2-0, 2. Herkimer College (NY) 1-0 and 3. Dallas-Eastfield 2-0.

Former Flyers at Other Places - Several Flyer alums got off to good starts at four-year colleges over the past two weeks.

Corry Addison was credited with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists as St. Andrews dropped its opener to Carolina University. In Franklin, MA, Winston Bryan scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four assists to help Dean College win its first game 56-46 over Framingham State.

And Will Boyd was credited with 12 points and 22 boards in the University of Virgin Islands' second game of the season against Morris College.
